Dear Lucky Miller,
I can relate to you in many ways. I understand how you can be so young yet have the knowledge to see the changes in society around you. Although it sounds funny, a 19 year old talking about changes in society when you haven’t lived that long but I understand what you mean. You were right when you said, “everything these days is getting more impersonal, it seems.” It seems like back in the days people had more time for one another, now everyone is too busy. When I was growing up I remember neighbors being much nicer, more friendly and trustworthy. Today, everyone is scared to talk to their neighbors or ask them for something. When you were growing up, you said that you enjoyed being chased by Booby, who worked in the grocery store. I can just imagine someone today chasing a child around a supermarket; they would probably go home and find a law suit in the mail.
Today all people think about is money and their jobs. The society is depressed, and they do not realize it. People back then, would work but they enjoyed it, the pay was great and they still had time to say “hello” or to visit a family friend. Now days, people are working and they do not have a clue to where their money is going. You work a job that does not pay you what you really need to survive. Back then, everyone seemed okay and happy with their lives, but people now just want more. I think we are depressed now because no matter what you have or what kind of car you drive or how much you get paid, we always want more. We want what others have and we are going to be depressed until we get it, and when we do get it, we want more.
Our society has changed drastically due to the people being selfish and demanding. As you describe your childhood, you knew many people in your community and you were interested in knowing what is on the other side of the street. When you went to the other side, you felt it was basically the same, nothing special. I believe everyone now days is not happy, we are always “bored” and when we do something exciting it does not last a long time. When I was growing up I thought going to the park was the greatest thing in the world, but even kids now days want more. You take a child to the park and they will complain how boring it is and how they want to go somewhere else. Growing up I also loved when I went over my cousin’s house or when people came to visit my family and I. Today, no one comes over and I barely see my cousins, because we all have different schedules and at the end of the day people want to go home and relax. People back in the day, they did not have a lot of technology and things we have today and I believe that is part of the reason our society today is so depressed. Today we have everything we have seen everything and that is why we want more, back then they weren’t even thinking about navigation systems and touch screen phones, no one really cared about those things. Our society should be the happy ones, we have new technology to make our lives faster and easier yet we still complain and have no time for anyone.
Sincerely, Amanda Shaiyah
