CR1

Dear Jan Powers,

You are one very interesting character Ms. Powers. I say character and not person because that is what you’ve turned yourself into. While working at a popular entertainment magazine, you’ve ironically managed to become an entertainment character, a caricature, someone culture can easily poke fun at because of your cartoonish and simple-minded beliefs. It is also because  since you’ve managed to marginalize others you’ve actually made yourself powerless.  Your apathy has disabled your power to make a difference. You are now powerless, you cannot fight the war on social injustice. You cannot protect yourself. This is your invitation in to the life of the oppressed.

Speaking of war, I heard you watched a video on the war. You say it’s a shame that a bunch of kids are fighting a war. But I’ve been to war, and let me say it’s an even bigger shame they let underworked/overpaid kids work easy jobs on a magazine staff. After all, even someone who is planning on enlisting in the military (not even a soldier yet) has more power than you. He or she is using the two things everyone should use: a pen and an opinion. You may have a pen, but you definitely don’t have a worthy opinion, kind of like having a rifle with no bullets in war, making you mission ineffective. It is kind of like that “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Well, the same concept applies for the pen.

On a brighter note, I really hope your quest for a life in Highland Park goes well.  You stated that children run to the next woman in the room, much like dogs do. That is very interesting and I hope your future fantasy where your potential kids are dogs comes true. I think this should be a time to reassess who the kids really are. I have my pen and opinion. I am armed and ready to battle social injustice. I hope no one is left behind like a powerless and defenseless child. I hope your new life works out well. Again I say, welcome to the life of the powerless.

Sincerely,

Orlando Hurtado
