I am a fan of the new show on Fox, "Glee." While I was watching the new episode this week, I realized how perfect it would be to write about for this assignment. The show takes place at a small high school in rural Ohio and focuses on the kids in glee club. The glee club is made up of both jocks (footballers), cheerios (cheerleaders) and glee kids (original members of glee club). The jocks and cheerios are new to glee club and in this episode, were forced to decide whether they would remain jocks or cheerios (popular kids) or stay in glee club (nerdy, unpopular kids). The glee kids are often prone to torment (getting Big Gulp Slurpies thrown at them) and bullying while the jocks and cheerios are priveledged with popularity and freedom.
This episode focused on social groups (popular vs. unpopular; jocks vs. nerds) and the pressure to fit into any one group. This pressure and these social groups (or cliques) are prevalent in our culture today and in schools throughout the world. Whether you like to play football, sing, play music, dance, act, etc., we should all learn to embrace these talents and individuality. Who knows, there could be a hidden talent in all of us.
