Dear Lucky Miller,
Hey, how are you doing? I read about you in the book “Division Street America” by Studs Terkel. I agree with your view about the changes that has occurred in the society. You said that when you were child, you used to think that “there is no evil in the world.” When I read this, I remembered my childhood. When I was child, I also used to think that the evil does not exist in this world and my world was bound in the place I was living. But being child we do not know about the evil in this world and we think what we see, that is the positive side of the world. How ignorant we were!! Sometimes I think it was better to be a child and to be ignorant.
You thought that “The city is beautiful, yet it’s ugly. May be it’s the ugliness of the city that makes it beautiful.” You think that the exterior of the city is not beautiful and the people lives in pain but many areas have their own color. I agree that lot of changes have occurred in the society compare to the society in the past but still there are some parts that have their own life.
You said that people are now so busy that they have to work all the time to make a living. They work all the time. As a result, they get tired and have no time to live their life. You thought that “There is no life in them, no spirit.” I agree with you. Nowadays, people are so busy in their life that there is no life in them. Due to the changes that have occurred in the economy, it has become necessary for people to make their living and provide better schooling to their children. During fifties, women were not allowed to work and if she tried to do so, people made fun of her .The ideal work for women is to stay at home and take care of her husband and children. But nowadays, in this high economy, women need to work. Moreover, instead of making fun of her, if she works now, people in the surrounding encourage her to work.
So, in this economic period everyone is busy, working all day long and we do get materialistic happiness from it. But in this fast going life, what we are missing is eternal happiness. I am not against work. Work is necessary to make money, without which life is not possible nowadays. But what I mean is as you say, to have some time for caring and helping each other, out of the daily schedule.
When I read about you, I was reminded of my grandmother. She always used to say that nowadays the society has changed a lot compare to the society when she was young. During that time people had time to for conversation wherever they meet. They used to have time caring for each other. But nowadays people do not have time for doing that. I think that it is not that we are not benefiting from working all day. We do earn money which is necessary. But at the same time we are losing the eternal happiness which is also needed.
I had written this letter to show my opinions about your thinking about the changes that had occurred in the society. So, now you are working in a super market. How is your job going on? Ok bye for now and keep in touch. Take care.

Sincerely,
Hemal.
