oral history

I interviewed a friend of mines who is still in high school and i have known her for a very long time.

What is your full name and why were you named it?

Nana Adjoa Agyimaa Owusu...my father named me that because I was born on a monday.                                                                       Were you named after somebody else? I was named after my grandfather on my dads side...I was given the feminine version of his name because I was his first grandchild from my dad. I was born in Accra,Ghana at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on August 5th, 1991.

Do you remember your great-grandparents? What do you know about them? No, but I know my great-grandfather on my mother's side was the chief of the Ga region in Accra during his time; King Tackie-Tawiah the II. My grandfather on my  mother's side. He would always play with me and make me laugh when I was a baby.

What would you consider to be the most important inventions that have been made during your lifetime? The cellphone because besides it being a source of entertainment it can be a real life saver. Also the laptop and mP3 player/iPod. Everything is more technology based and alot of things can be done through the computer and internet.                                                                         Do you remember having a favorite nursery rhyme or bedtime story? What was it? Yes, I liked the 'Mother Goose' nursery rhymes "Hey Diddle Diddle".                                                        What were your favorite toys and what were they like?

I played with alot of baby dolls when I was a little girl. I had one that was made like a real baby where you could feed them real food and they peed and u could change their diapers...its was called 'my real baby'. And I had an EasyBake Oven so I could make mini cakes and stuff.

What was your favorite subject in school and why?

I always liked math because it was easy for me and I did good in it. What was your least favorite subject in school and why? History. History was just boring and involed too much reading.

Who was your favorite teacher and why were they special?

My second grade teacher Mrs. Sullivan. She was very nice and a good teacher and for every holiday we were in school she would throw us a little party in the classroom. She also used to call me Nana Banana...her own nickname for me.                                                                               What school activities and sports did you participate in?

I was in the school band from 5th grade throughtout high school and I participated in All-City Band which is like the best of the best of CPS students in music. I played volleyball and softball for one year each too.

How would you describe your sense of humor?

I have a great sense of humor...I laugh at alot of things and the smallest thing can make me laugh..but sometimes I'll laugh at things that shouldn't be laughed at like people falling down the stairs...but I find it funny so I cant help it lol.                                                                                                            Do you have a favorite story about a pet?

What is it?  Yea, when I was 7 years old my auntie brought my little sister who was 2 at the time, a goldfish in a clear plastic cup. The water got dirty from my sister feeding the fish like every 15 minutes so I decided to change it. I accidently killed the goldfish because I didn't know when I was changing the water not to use hot water. But my dad bought my sister a new gold fish the next day so it was ok...its name was Spanky.                                                                                                               As a young African lady now living in Chicago tell me what you think about Chicago and how it is to living in it?

chicago is a city of many cultures..its diversity is what makes it a great city. I like chicago because no matter what side of the city you on there is always something to do. The city is also beautiful in appearance from grant park to millenium park,my favorite place.i live on the southside of chicago in a predominantly black neighborhood..my neighborhood is a pretty quiet and safe place especially since alot of my neighbors are police off icers..so its a safe nice place to live and the people are nice too.                                                    What do you think of President Obama?

I love Obama! He seems like he has a great, bubbly personality and I agree with everything he is saying!
