Dear Cassandra Dunn,
I just finish reading a comment you said in the book the fifties and I'm don't surprised by your fathers respond. U seem strong and independent; I mean to stand out and say your going to become a lawyer despite what the world may think. As women in any society things are hard, we are a group that is oppressed. We as women experience both marginalization and cultural imperialism. See you are not the only person who feels she can be better and achieve better things. Women all around our nation starve to be empowered people such as politics, policemen, lawyers, and CEO's. Almost everyone of these women have someone feeding them negative thoughts whether it is their fathers, relatives, spouses, or teachers. Even though your father believes no man would want you if you became a lawyer you as a person will win over whatever man you believe deserves you. Your father has these beliefs because society influences this kind of cultural imperialism. That women can have education but they should not have to much and they do not belong in the work force but instead at home.
Women to women I understand how sometimes we as a gender are outcast. But what i can't understand is the way your father feels. I have a father you supports me one hundred percent even though he may think its a mistake or that i might don't success. I know the difference in time has a big influence on how your fathers accepted our decisions but believe it or not their are still people who believe in the same beliefs as your father. In my senior year my English teacher told me when she was a young adult, she told her father she wanted to become a teacher. Her father felt it was good enough that she had finished college, now he felt she needed to work on finding a husband and having children. I even have this friend who believes she should never act smart then any man she goes out with because men do not like girls who are smarter then them. I find this outrageous but the true is some men do not like it and they mistreat you for it.
So no matter what country, time, generation, culture, etc that you come from some people (men or women) have a low standards of what women should or should not be. See i have yet to experience a moment when a men or women neglects me for being a women. But when and if I ever come into contact with a situation like that, I would simply look into that person i eyes and tell them exactly how i feel. "Lets be clear on one thing I am the key to the universe. I am the person that allows this nation to continue to grow. We as women are the only people who can hold a child. So if you allow society to influence your thoughts of what i can and can not do due to my gender then shame on you. Besides I am women, stronger, independent, smart, and overall multi talent. With or with out your or society approval I will be acknowledge as a legend someday". So my ever lasting advise to you Ms. Dunn is to be who you want to be and embrace the fact that you are a WOMEN and proud of it!
Sincerely Your Friend,
Felicia
