Creative Response

Dear Florence Scala,
It must have been hard for you, having to see your neighborhood knock down just for a University. After living in the same block forty-five years and the city tells you to move out the way, so they could build their project, it must be heart breaking. The idea of having the University of Illinois build in your neighborhood is good, but not when its going to destroy the whole neighborhood. The city could have build the University in a different location where people weren’t living, like a park, by the river, an airport, or even by the railroads but they chose to destroy your neighborhood. Many homes, schools, and parks, businesses, church were destroyed. People have dedicated their time n money in building their house, especially the people that had their family living in the neighborhood for generations. Its sad to hear that your community just finished building a new school and church so it could be knock down the next day. What is even sad is that the people from your neighborhood, move into worse neighborhoods and others moved into public housing. The people that moved in to nice neighborhoods are not happy living there. I think it was pretty nice how you would volunteer at the hull house and attend the meets to save the neighborhood. Even though had your mistakes by over trusting the other people in the hull house. They where the ones that could have stopped the bulldozers from destroying the neighborhood, but they didn’t. they didn’t listen to the peoples voices, they just went on with the cities project. I’m glade that many of the people didn’t easily accept this situation, and they went down fighting. Even though in the end the neighborhood was destroyed. Its sad that you cant walked the same streets of your old neighborhood and say, “That where I used to live.” or “I went to that school.” The only thing they didn’t destroy are the memories and good times you had growing up. Well I hope you are doing good, and living in a nicer neighborhood even though it not going to be the same.
Sincerely,
Dave
